SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Retired Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has landed in Boston on a medical flight coming from the Dominican Republic, where he was shot on Sunday night.
Red Sox officials sent the plane so "Big Papi" could be brought to Massachusetts General Hospital for further treatment.
Ortiz, 43, was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot him in the back at nearly point-blank range Sunday night in his native Dominican Republic, authorities said.
"Our medical team here in Boston and the doctors in the Dominican Republic have confirmed that David’s condition is still serious, but that he is stable enough to be transported back here to Boston for continued care," said team president Sam Kennedy.

Just an awful thing to happen to a great ambassador of the game. Best wishes for Big Papi, and props to the Red Sox for their involvement.
