LAWRENCE, MASS. (WHDH) - Teams are going door-to-door conducting safety inspections in the Merrimack Valley as work gets underway to replace damaged gas lines Monday following disastrous explosions and fires earlier this month.
Dozens of Columbia Gas and contracted construction teams will begin replacing the 48-mile, cast iron and bare steel distribution system with state-of-the-art infrastructure and safety features, according to a statement issued Thursday. This is expected to be completed by Nov. 19.
Hundreds of residents in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover remain without gas, leaving them in the cold as fall-like temperatures enter the area.
Officials plan to distribute 24,000 space heaters following the inspections of each affected home.
If they determine a house is unfit for a space heater, officials said they will find an alternative for the residents.

Somerville Mayor Says City Will Observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Not Columbus Day
SOMERVILLE (CBS) – The city of Somerville is ditching Columbus Day for Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Mayor Joe Curtatone announced Thursday.
Somerville joins Cambridge and other places in New England like Portland, Maine and Durham, New Hampshire by choosing to recognize those who lived in the Americas before European colonization instead of Christopher Columbus.
“Columbus Day is a relic of an outdated and oversimplified version of history,” Curtatone wrote in Facebook post. “We all know there’s more to the story than a nursery rhyme.”

Del Mar board votes to suspend fairgrounds gun show up to a year
The family-owned company that has operated the gun shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds for nearly 30 years failed to overcome growing public concern about gun violence nationwide and questions about its owners’ legal troubles.
The board that oversees activities at the state-owned venue voted 8-1 Tuesday to suspend the shows after Dec. 31 until a policy is developed that could include a complete ban on the possession of any firearms or ammunition.
It may be the first agency in the state to take such action, a remarkable turnaround for a hugely popular event that for decades drew little scrutiny from the board. The directors routinely approved its contracts allowing the exhibition and sale of the latest in high-tech weaponry, accessories, clothing and gear.
Yet, increasingly, they have become a target for gun-safety advocates who have attended board meetings and stood outside the events with signs demanding an end to the shows.
Members of the board said they hoped the decision would serve as a model for other communities struggling with whether to continue the shows and possibly herald a sea change in the public’s appetite for gun shows, especially at state-owned fairgrounds.
“We are not doing our kids any service if we continue this,” said Director Lisa Barkett, before voting for the suspension. “If we come together as a community, maybe we can set the standard for California.”
After Dec. 31, only education events would be allowed

This could have turned out differently
If only these young men had submitted proper applications for the "legal" distribution of marijuana in the Commonwealth.
If only one of these three Lads had submitted proper applications to safely operate a motor vehicle in the state.
Thank Goodness these poor kids had the forethought to pitch their weapons out of the car, Otherwise there would have been yet another set of applications and fees to explain away.
At least they had plenty of cash on them for making change and such.
Don't worry though ... the Judge will probably go easy on these young entrepreneurs.

ARLINGTON, Mass. - Three men from Everett have been arrested after police found them in possession of marijuana and thousands of dollars in cash.
On Saturday night around 10 p.m., Chelsea Police alerted Arlington Police of a road rage incident where a firearm was allegedly displayed. Police say the vehicle involved was registered to an Everett woman who worked in Arlington.
Soon after, officers saw the car driving in Arlington and pulled it over. Inside the car, officers found $25,000 cash, approximately 12 ounces of marijuana packed in small plastic bags, a digital scale, and a box of resealable plastic bags. The three men inside, 23-year-old Jaylon Butler, 23-year-old Malachi Barnett, and 24-year-old Branden Taylor were taken into custody. All three were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Butler was also charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
